Custom containers: lighting and extra features for your space

Applications & Inspiration · 4 min read · Updated 12 Jul 2026

In short: A custom container is a shipping container adapted to your application in HEROX's own workshop, with lighting and electrics as the most requested features. Alongside standard personnel doors, insulation and a power connection, you can choose windows, ventilation grilles, a lock box to deter break-ins, and a finish in any RAL colour. HEROX carries out every modification before delivery, so you receive a ready-to-use space at the location of your choice. This turns a steel container into a fully functional workspace, storage unit or hobby room.

A standard shipping container is sturdy, wind and watertight and ready to use for storage straight away. But as soon as you want to spend longer working inside it or use it as a fully fitted space, customisation makes all the difference. From lighting and electrics to windows, insulation and colour: at HEROX your container is adapted in our own workshop before it arrives at your location.

In brief
  • All modifications are completed before delivery in our own workshop
  • Lighting and electrics make the container suitable as a workspace
  • Extra personnel doors, windows and ventilation grilles on request
  • Insulation and spraying in any RAL colour available
  • Lock box against break-ins for extra security
  • Double door, open side, flat rack and reefer containers also available

What does a custom container mean?

A custom container is a shipping container that goes beyond the bare steel base. The structure stays the same: a guaranteed wind and watertight, CSC-certified container built to withstand the elements. On top of that, HEROX builds in exactly the features your application calls for. If you need storage behind the premises, a bit of extra ventilation and a lock box are often enough. If you work in it daily, lighting, electrics and insulation come into play.

Because the customisation happens in our own workshop, the options combine well. You don't need to bring in a contractor for the basic finish: the container is delivered ready to use at the location of your choice.

The main custom options at a glance

The features below are the ones requested most often. They can be chosen individually or combined, depending on whether you use the container for storage, as a workshop or as a living space.

A container with lighting: from dark space to workplace

Untreated steel lets no light through, so without adaptation a closed container is always dark inside. A container with lighting changes that completely. In the workshop, HEROX fits LED fixtures, switches and sockets, powered by a tidy electrical installation with a central connection. That way you can use tools, plug in equipment or simply move around safely, even on a dark winter's day.

Combine lighting with windows and you bring in daylight during the day, saving on artificial light. For an office or hobby room, that combination works best. If you want the container sprayed in a colour of your choice, that spray work is done in the same workshop, including the double doors, so everything is delivered in one even shade.

Insulation and interior finish

If you want to use the container as a living space, insulation is the most important step. Untreated steel barely insulates and heats up quickly in the sun, while temperature differences between day and night cause condensation. Insulating the walls, roof and floor creates a pleasant indoor climate that's usable all year round. This is often followed by an interior finish with wall panels and a floor, so the space no longer feels like a container.

For a container home or an extensive conversion, HEROX finishes the container as a shell with the basic features, after which a contractor or architect handles the further fit-out. If you're torn between a container and a permanent building, read the comparison shipping container versus steel shed. Extra height helps with insulation and the ceiling: a 40ft High Cube leaves more headroom after fitting out.

How the customisation process works

From the first idea to the placed container, you go through a few clear steps. That way you know exactly what you'll get in advance.

From wish to ready-to-use container

  1. 1
Define the use: decide whether it's for storage, a workspace or a living space, as that determines which features make sense.
  2. 2
Choose the options: put together your package from lighting, electrics, insulation, windows, ventilation, lock box and colour.
  3. 3
Request a quote: pass on the type, the modifications you want and the delivery location, and receive a price on working days within an hour.
  4. 4
Work carried out in the workshop: HEROX completes all adaptations before the container leaves the depot.
  5. 5
Delivery and placement: the container is set down exactly where you want it with a crane truck or sideloader, usually within 3 to 7 working days.
💡

When planning lighting and electrics, think about ventilation straight away. As soon as you use a container more intensively, condensation forms more quickly. Ventilation grilles or insulation prevent moisture and protect both the contents and the lifespan of the container.

The spot and access matter too

A custom container starts with the features, but placement is just as important for the end result. Make sure you have a reasonably level, firm surface and enough room for a lorry. For a container in the garden or yard, read placing a container in the garden to see what to watch out for regarding surface and access. That way your finished container stands firm and level in the right spot right away.

Frequently asked questions

Which features can HEROX fit in a container?

In our own workshop, HEROX fits lighting and electrics, extra personnel doors, windows, ventilation grilles, a lock box against break-ins and insulation, among other things. The container can also be sprayed in any RAL colour. The options can be chosen individually or combined, depending on whether you use the container for storage, as a workspace or as a living space.

Can I have a container delivered with lighting?

Yes, lighting is one of the most requested modifications. HEROX fits LED fixtures, switches and sockets with a tidy electrical installation and central connection. This is done before delivery, so you receive the container ready to use. Combined with windows, you bring in daylight during the day and save on artificial light in a workshop or office.

Are modifications carried out before or after delivery?

HEROX carries out all modifications before delivery, in our own workshop. That way the container is delivered ready to use and you don't need to arrange anything on site. The container is then set down in the spot you want with a crane truck or sideloader, usually within 3 to 7 working days after you approve the quote.

Do I need insulation if I want to work in the container?

For use as a workspace or living space, insulation is strongly recommended. Untreated steel barely insulates, heats up quickly and causes condensation through temperature differences. Insulating the walls, roof and floor creates a pleasant indoor climate that's usable all year round. This is often followed by an interior finish with wall panels and a floor.

What does a custom container cost?

The price depends on the size, the condition and which features you choose, plus transport costs to your location. There's no fixed amount without those details. When requesting a quote, let us know which type of container you want, which modifications you're after and where it needs to be placed. On working days you'll receive a concrete price by email within an hour.
