Buying a new or used shipping container: what is the difference?

Choosing & Buying · 5 min read · Updated 12 Jul 2026

In short: A new (one-trip) shipping container has made exactly one sea voyage and is virtually as-new, while a used container in cargo-worthy or A-grade condition has already been in service but is guaranteed wind and watertight and CSC-certified. The biggest difference is in price and appearance: new is more expensive and virtually flawless, used is cheaper and may show light signs of use. In lifespan and quality they barely differ, because both are inspected before delivery. For most storage and workshop purposes a used shipping container offers the best value for money; choose new when appearance really matters.

Buying a new or used shipping container: the choice determines not only the price, but also the appearance and lifespan of your investment. A new (one-trip) container is virtually unused and looks sharp, while a used container in cargo-worthy A-grade condition is considerably cheaper and is guaranteed to be just as wind and watertight. Which option suits you best depends mainly on budget and application.

In short
  • New (one-trip) has made exactly one sea voyage and is virtually as-new
  • Used is cargo-worthy or A-grade: guaranteed wind and watertight and CSC-certified
  • Used usually offers the best value for money for storage
  • New looks sharper: barely any dents or signs of use
  • Both options are inspected before delivery
  • Delivery of both options typically takes place within 3 to 7 working days

What exactly do 'new' and 'used' mean for a shipping container?

When buying a new shipping container, it is always a one-trip container: built in the factory, having made exactly one sea voyage to bring goods to the importer, and therefore virtually as-new afterwards. There are no years of wear, only the light traces of that single trip.

When buying a used shipping container, you are buying a container that has been in service for longer and has been bought back as cargo-worthy or A-grade. That does not mean 'written off': every used container is inspected at the depot and is guaranteed wind and watertight and CSC-certified before delivery. Buying a second-hand shipping container therefore does not automatically mean compromising on quality, only on appearance.

Why is a new container more expensive than a used one?

The price difference between new and used mainly comes down to production: a one-trip container has just been built and has only one trip behind it, while a used container has been around longer and is therefore cheaper to buy in and resell. When buying a new storage container, you are essentially paying for that virtually unused condition, not for extra quality in terms of wind and watertightness. Quality and guarantee: how does that work for used?

Buying a used storage container does not mean you run the risk of leaks. Every container is checked before delivery, and used containers in cargo-worthy A-grade condition are guaranteed wind and watertight, with a valid CSC plate as certification. The difference from new is therefore not in the guarantee, but in the cosmetic condition: a new container has simply had less time to pick up paint damage or minor dents. Would you still like an even, fresh finish on a used container? It can be resprayed in any RAL colour in the workshop. With normal maintenance, both options last 25 to 30 years or more.

Pros and cons of choosing a used shipping container

✓ Voordelen
  • Cheaper than new, usually the best value for money for storage
  • Just as guaranteed wind and watertight and CSC-certified as new
  • Often available straight from stock at the European depots
  • An excellent basis for conversion into a workshop, garage or office
✕ Nadelen
  • Light signs of use such as scratches or small dents possible
  • Less suitable when a flawless appearance is crucial, for example a visible office unit
  • An extra respray is needed for an even, new colour

When should you choose new after all?

For storage on your yard, in the garden or on the building site, appearance often matters little, and buying a second-hand shipping container is the logical choice. If the container is set to play a visible role instead, for example as an office, showroom or reception, or as the basis for a container home, then the virtually flawless condition of a new one-trip container often outweighs the price difference. Businesses that place great value on a uniform, unused look in their own house style also often choose new.

Lifespan and maintenance: the difference over the long term

In the long run, the difference between new and used is smaller than many buyers expect. Both options are made from corrosion-resistant steel and, with normal use and regular maintenance, last 25 to 30 years or more. A new container simply starts that lifespan with a slightly bigger head start in coating, while a used container has already been checked for any worn spots before delivery. As long as the coating and seals are checked over now and then, maintenance is comparable for both options.

💡

Still in doubt? A used container in cargo-worthy A-grade condition is the smartest choice for most storage and workshop purposes: the same guarantee on wind and watertightness, a lower price and often quicker in stock. Choose new when appearance matters, for example with a visible office unit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a new and used shipping container?

A new (one-trip) shipping container has made exactly one sea voyage and is virtually as-new, with no notable signs of use. A used container in cargo-worthy or A-grade condition has been in service longer, but is inspected before delivery and guaranteed wind and watertight and CSC-certified. The difference is therefore mainly in price and appearance, not in the quality guarantee.

Is a used shipping container just as wind and watertight as a new one?

Yes. Every container is inspected before delivery, and used containers in cargo-worthy A-grade condition are, just like new containers, guaranteed wind and watertight, with a valid CSC plate as certification. The difference is not in the watertightness, but in cosmetic details such as light scratches or small dents.

What does a new shipping container cost compared to a used one?

A used 20ft container starts from {{price:20ft:used}}, a new (one-trip) 20ft container from {{price:20ft:new}}. The price difference is because a one-trip container has just been built and has only one trip behind it. For an exact amount including transport, HEROX sends a quote within the hour on working days.

How much longer does a used shipping container last?

With normal use and regular maintenance, a used shipping container, just like a new one, will last another 25 to 30 years or more. The exact lifespan depends on the environment and how quickly any damage to the coating is repaired. Regular checks of seals and ventilation prevent most wear.

When is new (one-trip) the better choice?

New is the better choice when appearance is important, for example with a visible office unit, showroom or container home where a flawless look is desired. For storage, workshop or building site, appearance usually matters little, and a used container with the same guarantee is the cheaper choice.
